Tacoma Program Overview

Every Rainier Scholars program is built for its unique community. Seattle's model reflects two decades of partnership across six school districts, with support provided from 5th grade through college. Tacoma, as our first expansion site, was always going to find its own shape, tailored to this community's unique demographic, cultural, and economic landscape. This year, that shape is coming into focus: Tacoma's program will be the first college access program in the area that concentrates on the formative middle school years, 5th through 8th grade.
This is a sharper version of what we built in Seattle, concentrated on the years where we've seen scholars grow the most to offer a more sustainable program model. Two decades of scholar and family feedback shows us that scholars make their steepest academic gains during the Academic Enrichment Phase, in 5th and 6th grade. Education builds cumulatively. Every skill a scholar develops in those years becomes the foundation for what comes next, and that foundation determines how ready they are for the leap into rigorous high school coursework.
In practice, our updated program model means that Tacoma is strengthening its academic curriculum to ensure scholars in our program are ready for the rigor needed to excel in high school college prep courses. We're building intentional workshops around high school and college readiness and making connections to college exploration and leadership development opportunities. Tacoma's story is still being written, and we are confident that this refocus is rooted in what works while supporting scholars to be ready for what's next.

SPOTLIGHTS
At Rainier Scholars, we’re building scholarly habits meant to last a lifetime. That means looking beyond test scores and focusing on what it takes to be a good student, colleague, and community member.
We call these active learning skills, known in the education world as executive functioning skills: the practical, teachable tools that let a student manage their own learning. Rainier Scholars teaches seven of them explicitly throughout the Academic Enrichment Phase: time management, organization, risk-taking, accountability, self-advocacy, collaborative learning, and effort.
While most schools assume students will adopt these habits along the way, Rainier Scholars builds active learning skills directly into our Academic Enrichment Phase. The skills are reinforced by the structure of every class, through every assignment, and in every conversation with families. Scholars always know what’s expected of them.
Talk to any Rainier Scholars alum and they will likely speak to the importance of active learning skills. They carry these skills forward into middle and high school, college, career, and beyond. In follow-up conversations, scholars consistently cite these lessons in impacting future skills like managing their time and taking ownership of their work as a key factor in their success. These skills are showing up today in how scholars advocate for themselves in college, in the workplace, and in everyday life.
Our goal is to empower scholars who know how to learn, adapt, and keep going, whatever the classroom of the future looks like.

FINANCIALS
In fiscal year 2026, Rainier Scholars received several significant commitments, including the largest multi-year gift in our history: $3 million over three years in support of our operating budget. These commitments give us a stronger foundation for the years ahead and reflect deep confidence in our scholars and our mission. We also remained disciplined stewards of every dollar, ending the year with expenses below budget. As in prior years, the Rainier Scholars Board of Trustees continued to invest reserve funds alongside the revenue reported below to sustain our programs and support our long-term strategy.
